Death of a Colleague – former Herts Chair

It is with sadness that we announce the death of recently retired Gerry McDonald. Gerry was for some time the Chair of the Herts Black & Asian Police Association.

Stevenage Chief Inspector Alicia Shaw, writes,

Sad new from Hertfordshire this week our former HBAPA Chair recently retired Chief Inspector Gerry McDonald died suddenly this week at home only 6 months after his retirement in July 2018.

For many years  Gerry was the most senior ranking BME officer and supported and advised  so many BME officers through promotion processes myself included ( I now stand on his shoulders) . Gerry was a very popular Chief Inspector and the shock across the force is huge. Even though he was retired the force have recognised the impact his sudden passing has had on staff and has authorised flags to fly at half-mast for 2 days which is unusual for a retired officer.

He was only 53 and leaves behind his wife and 2 sons – he also served in the Met prior to coming to Herts.”
