NBPA STATEMENT ON Met PROPOSAL FOR 50-50 RECRUITMENT ‘POLICING NEEDS TO STEP INTO THE 21st CENTURY ON DIVERSITY’

The NBPA welcomes the current debate within the Metropolitan Police on the issue of Policing and Diversity.

Britain in the 21st Century is Ethnically Diverse and as has been highlighted during the Olympics, London in particular is a World Class Modern Diverse City.

In order for our Policing capability to keep pace and be World Class at protecting people and communities, the Metropolitan Police and police sevices around the country must use all the measures available to them under current provisions to embrace cultural and Ethnic Diversity

Government has a role to play in terms of examining very carefully if there is more that can be done to empower Constabularies to bring the service into the 21st Century.

50-50 Recruitment worked in Northern Ireland and with the appropriate framework of support, there is no reason why this should not work elsewhere in the United Kingdom as a means of reflecting cultural and Ethnic Diversity in recruitment, progression and promotion policies.

Government therefore needs to strengthen rather than weaken provisions under the Equality Act 2010 if it truly wants democratic Policing in The 21st Century.
